ABOUT
Irish Soprano Rebecca Murphy was a member of the Opera Studio at Oper Köln from 2020 - 2022. She was also an Alvarez Young Artist with Garsington Opera (2023), and is an alumni of the Northern Ireland Opera Studio (2018-19). Rebecca is currently the recipient of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland Young Musicians Platform Award. This season sees her carry out her first contract at English National Opera, as well as premiering the role of Miranda in Ian Wilson's contemporary opera The Collector. Other highlights include a premiere of Conor Mitchell's new work The Sun Still Shines with the Ulster Orchestra, amongst other projects with the Orchestra. She will also record her debut album Voyage, funded by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.
Rebecca’s operatic roles include Zerbinetta Ariadne auf Naxos (Garsington Opera), Sandmännchen/Taumännchen Hänsel und Gretel (Oper Köln), Blonde Die Entführung aus dem Serail (Oper Köln), Janine/Ofwarren The Handmaid's Tale (English National Opera) Pünktchen Pünktchen und Anton (Oper Köln), Woglinde Das Rheingold/Götterdämmerung (Oper Köln), Dritte Norn Götterdämmerung (Oper Köln), Helmwige Die Walküre (Oper Köln), Liscione La Dirindina (Northern Ireland Opera), The Vile Little Girl The Musician - Conor Mitchell (The Belfast Ensemble), Mabel Pirates of Penzance (The Belfast Ensemble), Rose Maurrant Street Scene (Royal Conservatoire of Scotland), Soprano 1 Le Vin Herbé (Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) , First Witch in Dido and Aeneas (Sestina Ensemble) and Maria West Side Story (Grand Opera House, Belfast).
In 2016, she was a finalist in Northern Ireland Opera’s Festival of Voice Competition. She is also a recipient of the Irish Heritage Bursary (2017), after competing for the prize at the Wigmore Hall, London.
In concert, Rebecca has appeared with the Ulster Orchestra, Blackwater Valley Opera Festival, Oper Köln, Gürzenich Orchester, Garsington Opera, Sestina Ensemble, the Charles Wood Singers, the Kellie Consort, The Belfast Ensemble, and Genesis Sixteen.
An enthusiast for modern music, she regularly performs and records the music of Irish composers Conor Mitchell and Anselm McDonnell, and features on Anselm McDonnell's album Kraina (2023), also having given a recital of the same at the Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris.
Rebecca graduated with a Master of Music from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2018, under the vocal tutelage of Wilma MacDougall. Previously, she studied with Debra Stuart at Queens University Belfast, where she gained a Bachelor of Music. Rebecca then continued her studies privately in London with the late Kathryn Harries.
